Key Facts

  • Hyperliquid co-founder and CEO Jeff Yan said Wall Street's traditional wealth creation model is unsustainable for most participants, speaking at a Token2049 Singapore fireside chat.

  • Yan argued that retail investors are typically excluded from an asset's biggest growth phase, since many assets trade among a small group of insiders before becoming publicly available.

  • Yan said Hyperliquid's mission is to expand access to wealth creation and financial system participation, treating revenue as a secondary outcome rather than the primary goal.

Hyperliquid co-founder and CEO Jeff Yan said the traditional Wall Street wealth creation model is unsustainable for most participants, speaking at a fireside chat during the Token2049 conference in Singapore.

Why Yan Says Retail Misses the Biggest Gains

Yan argued that the structure of traditional markets keeps retail investors out of an asset's most valuable growth period. "Certain assets are tradable by only a few people during most of their growth phases," Yan said, pointing to the period before a company goes public. By the time shares reach public markets through an initial public offering (IPO), he said, much of the value creation has already gone to a smaller group of early, privileged participants.
That framing positions Hyperliquid's own model, a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures trading, as an alternative path to the gains Yan said Wall Street's structure withholds from most participants. Hyperliquid (HYPE) has grown rapidly since launch, built by a team Yan has previously described as having roughly a dozen people and no venture capital backing.

Hyperliquid's Stated Mission Versus Its Revenue

Yan said Hyperliquid's mission centers on expanding access to wealth creation and broader participation in the financial system, describing revenue generation as a secondary consideration rather than something the platform optimizes for directly.

He has made similar comments at past industry events about building infrastructure he compares to foundational financial-market plumbing, rather than a product designed primarily to maximize fees.
