Bored Ape Yacht Club will apparently be releasing a P2E game sometime in 2022.

A blockchain game based on Bored Ape Yacht Club is in the works.

The popular NFT collection has teamed up with Animoca Brands to build the game, which is set to launch in the second quarter of 2022.

Few details have been shared about what the game will look like — however, we do know that it'll feature play-to-earn mechanics.

Players who are lucky enough to own a Bored Ape will be able to use them in the game, too.

But it's unclear whether gamers will need one of these NFTs to get involved. And given there are only 10,000 in existence, the game's popularity could be extremely limited if this is the case.

Growing the Bored Ape Universe

Animoca Brands positions itself as "the global leader in branded blockchain gaming" — and it's previously entered into partnerships with the likes of Formula 1.

The company's co-founder, Yat Siu, said:

"NFTs have emerged as a store of culture. There are very few icons that are able to represent the surging world of NFTs as powerfully as Bored Ape Yacht Club, which is why we, as a group and in aggregate, hold a significant number of them. We are incredibly excited and proud to collaborate on a game for this cultural milestone."

A spokesperson for Yuga Labs — the creators of Bored Ape Yacht Club — said they were "excited" to expand the benefits offered to the proud owners of these prized NFTs, adding:

"We can't wait to share more with the community about what we're building."

As a press release notes, it's been an extraordinary journey for Bored Apes. Each NFT offers a distinctive combination of more than 170 traits — with different expressions, headwear and clothes. They were initially sold for 0.08 ETH, worth $300 at the time of writing, but they're now selling for a minimum of $210,000.

Over the weekend, the owner of a Bored Ape accidentally sold their prized possession for just $3,066 after putting a decimal point in the wrong place. They had intended to list the NFT for $300,000.

The unlucky collector told CNET that a "lapse of concentration" was to blame, explaining:

"I list a lot of items every day and just wasn't paying attention properly. I instantly saw the error as my finger clicked the mouse but a bot sent a transaction with over 8 ETH of gas fees so it was instantly sniped before I could click cancel, and just like that, $250,000 was gone."

The pioneering P2E game — Axie Infinity — exploded in popularity in mid-2021 as players in developing countries are able to earn a decent income battling pets (Axies) against each other. Players from The Philippines accounted for a majority of the active users, and users from The Philippines can find out the Axie SLP price today here on CoinMarketCap.
