BREAKING: Criminal Charges Against Sam Bankman-Fried Unsealed, as FTX Founder Appears in Court

Hot on the heels of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a criminal indictment against Sam Bankman-Fried has been unsealed.

Count one is conspiracy to commit wire fraud on customers, amid allegations he "agreed with others to defraud customers of FTX.com" by misappropriating customer deposits and using them to pay the expenses and debts of sister trading firm Alameda Research.

Count two concerns wire fraud on customers, with SBF accused of "knowingly" devising a scheme for obtaining money using "false and fraudulent pretenses" — including through commercials that were broadcast on television and radio.

Count three alleges that there was a conspiracy to commit wire fraud on lenders. Whereas the earlier counts span a period from 2019 to 2022, this specific count focuses on June to November 2022.

"Bankman-Fried agreed with others to defraud lenders to Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried's proprietary hedge fund, by providing false and misleading information to those lenders regarding Alameda Research's financial condition."

Overall, there are eight counts — and others include money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and violate campaign finance laws.

SBF has now been ordered to forfeit "any and all property, real and personal, that constitutes or is derived from proceeds traceable to the commission of said offenses" in the first four counts.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office has confirmed that SBF is yet to be extradited to the U.S. — a process that could end up taking weeks.

In other developments, SBF has appeared in court in The Bahamas — arriving under heavy police escort.
