Petro emphasized that as cryptocurrencies make global inroads, they hold "promise for the prosperity of the people." His sentiments reflect a growing regional interest in digital assets among Latin American leaders.

Just this month, Argentina elected right-wing leader Javier Milei, an advocate for cryptocurrency adoption. With El Salvador already deeming Bitcoin legal tender in 2021, Petro's move could portend additional transformations in how South American nations approach and regulate digital currencies.
