Celestia Integrates Data Availability Layer with Polygon CDK
Polygon Labs' chain development kit (CDK) has announced its integration with Celestia, a data availability solution provider. This integration brings a specialized data availability solution to Layer 2 projects utilizing Polygon CDK, including platforms like OKX, Immutable, Astar, IDEX, Palm Network and others. The integration could potentially reduce gas fees by 100 times for Layer 2 chains, which are part of the Polygon 2.0 ecosystem.

Layer 2 networks built on Polygon's CDK leverage zero-knowledge rollup technology, enabling off-chain transaction aggregation and finalization on the Ethereum mainnet. However, the challenge lies in verifying data availability, ensuring secure retrieval and confirmation of off-chain stored data by all network participants.

The Ethereum platform lacks a dedicated execution environment for its data availability (DA) layer, leading to the necessity of processing and storing data on-chain indefinitely, contributing to increased fees for Layer 2 solutions. Data availability solutions are crucial in addressing this challenge.

Celestia's approach involves providing its own data availability solution, capable of serving storage bandwidth for multiple Layer 2 networks simultaneously. By enabling networks to run light nodes, this solution facilitates efficient DA verification without imposing excessive strain on the network.

Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, emphasized the significance of this integration, stating, "Combined with interoperability and unified liquidity provided by Polygon 2.0, Celestia's out-of-the-box solution will make creating new Layer 2 chains as simple and affordable as deploying a smart contract."
