The cryptocurrency world is experiencing another eventful day. SafeMoon's liquidity pool was attacked, and the details of the attack and the stolen amount are not yet known. On the other hand, MetaMask warned about fake token launch campaigns, stating that there will be no airdrop or snapshot on March 31st. Investors should continue to trade safely by paying attention to such warnings.

Popular crypto wallet MetaMask issued a warning on a fake $MASK token launch on March 28th, as reported on the project's Twitter account.

MetaMask is not launching any tokens!

MetaMask noted that there were widespread rumors claiming that the project would conduct an official token snapshot or airdrop on March 31st. The project emphasized that these rumors are not only false but also dangerous, enabling scammers to target crypto users.

Meanwhile, MetaMask software developer Dan Finlay stated that "a lot of people don't know what they're talking about" when it comes to the alleged airdrop hype. Finlay warned that scammers would "probably be around that day" and could harm users.

The rumor seems to have originated from a social media account named "eezzy" around March 26th and was later spread more widely by Degenscan leader serp1337.

The rumors cited supposed insider information that MetaMask would take a snapshot of user transactions on March 31st and then distribute these transactions as tokens before the 2024 airdrop. Initially, the rumor did not appear to spread for fraudulent purposes since it did not request a transfer to a specific address.

Although MetaMask does not have its own token, the possibility of a MetaMask token has been rumored for some time. In fact, it could have been initiated by ConsenSys, the parent company of MetaMask. Joseph Lubin, ConsenSys' co-founder and CEO, implied a token launch by tweeting "When $MASK?" in November 2021. Later in March 2022, Decrypt confirmed that Lubin was planning a token launch for MetaMask. This statement was then taken as evidence for an upcoming launch by several major sites.

However, the previous statement appears to have caused at least one real fraud incident. In December 2021, hundreds of users' funds were stolen when attackers took over a decentralized exchange to show that a WETH/$MASK trading pair existed. In January, another MetaMask scam involving address poisoning also occurred. Like many other wallets, MetaMask is frequently targeted by phishing campaigns.

In light of the recent fake $MASK token launch rumors, MetaMask users are warned to be careful and cautious in their crypto transactions.
