According to the <a href="https://www.bcg.com/publications/2018/tackling-1.6-billion-ton-food-loss-and-waste-crisis" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BCG study</a>, 1.6 billion tons of food worth about $1.2 trillion is lost or wasted each year — one-third of the total amount of food produced globally. BCG projects that the amount of food lost and wasted will increase by 1.9% annually from 2015 to 2030, while the dollar value will increase by 1.8%, and estimates that annual food loss and waste will reach 2.1 billion tons worth $1.5 trillion by 2030. Improved coordination among producers and suppliers could reduce the problem by $60 billion annually.<a href="https://www.parkoursc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/ParkourSC_TheStateofSupplyChainVisibility-0522.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ParkourSC and Sapio Research</a> conducted a survey among 210 U.S. supply chain decision-makers in the pharmaceutical and food &amp; beverage industry. The result of the survey showed that 97% of the respondents had experienced at least some product spoilage during fresh food shipments, and on average, 42% of that is the result of temperature excursions. The survey reveals that the larger the company, the higher the risk of product damage and the more food is wasted.To give an example (<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7426365/Lorry-driver-discovers-24-tonnes-fruit-turned-juice.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Daily Mail</a>), a truck driver was asked to take the shipment of fruit on a 45km drive from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to the customer for inspection. When he delivered it to a fruit and vegetable distributor, he discovered that his 24 tons of mango had turned into juice. The fruit was being transported in a refrigerated container, but the driver believed that the mangoes had been exposed to temperatures above 50°C due to a transportation error. Apparently, the temperature of the truck was not constantly monitored during transport. This is just one case, but in practice, it happens every day that food spoils in the supply chain due to a lack of monitoring of temperature, humidity, light, and shock.Another case of food waste related to supply chain transparency occurred in China. A cherry import of about 6,000 containers has halted after the inner packaging of a batch of imported cherries was found to be COVID-19 positive in Wuxi in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu. It was unclear which country the cherries came from, and all unsold cherries from the same batch were collected and destroyed. Most of the cherries sold in China come from Chile and Australia. However, the Chilean Embassy has denied that these cherries came from Chile (<a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202101/1213613.shtml?id&#61;11" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Global Times</a>).What if they had a single, real-time source that gave them visibility into the shipping process and the quality of shipments in transit? This would greatly reduce disputes caused by inconsistent and delayed data exchange.To address these issues and provide end-to-end visibility, OBORTECH is building a fully digital blockchain-based platform called Smart Hub that enables seamless monitoring, such as temperature tracking of refrigerated and frozen goods, on a single, integrated platform. Below, we would like to share a case we experienced during one of our beta tests.Mongolian Express LLC, one of the leading freight forwarding companies in Mongolia, imported and sold high-quality Red Prince apples from Elbe-Obst (German fruit-producing company) in Mongolia, which was transported fresh from their farms in Germany. 30% of the apples spoiled due to a lack of temperature control during storage and a long sales process. If they had also given consumers visibility of origin that the apples came from Germany on an easy and trusted platform, they could have kept demand high, sold faster, and avoided food waste.This is because there are many counterfeit products in Mongolia, and it is common for food of unknown origin to be sold with labels from other countries.After seven months, we, OBORTECH, cooperated with Mongolian Express LLC and Elbe-Obst to import and sell the same apple variety from Germany to Mongolia. Using our Smart Hub, a blockchain and IoT-based platform, we were able to track and share every important detail of the shipment throughout the process and share shipping-related documents such as certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate in a blockchain and IoT-based platform. Using QR codes on supermarket shelves, the Smart Hub platform assured consumers that their product was not counterfeit and allowed end users to track this information registered on the blockchain. As a result, consumer demand has increased, and we have been able to sell all of the imported apples three times faster than in the previous case.Furthermore, after the product arrives in Mongolia, it usually used to take at least 7–10 days at customs, depending on the customs clearance and inspection process, but with our solution of uploading the necessary documents into our Smart Hub platform in advance, we were able to shorten this time to 1 day by allowing the customs authorities to work quickly.By introducing the system that provides customers with a visibility of origin, we have managed to sell our products in a very short time and attract the attention of E-Mart, the largest Korean supermarket chain in Mongolia. Potential cooperation is now under a discussion phase.The challenge in the food supply chain is enormous, but there is a clear path forward. By now, all supply chain stakeholders — whether shippers, brokers, 3PLs, or carriers — understand the importance of transparency. The use of blockchain-based networks can enable end-to-end transparency and communication across the entire food supply chain — quickly, easily, and cost-effectively. The availability and sharing of authentic information about each step of the food supply chain improves food safety, strengthens brand integrity, and increases customer engagement.
