The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has granted final approval for Ripple's national trust bank charter, clearing the way for regulated crypto custody services.
Ripple has received final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for its national trust bank charter. CryptoBriefing and Cointelegraph both reported the development on October 26 and 27, 2026. The approval allows Ripple National Trust Bank to operate under a federal charter overseen by the OCC.
A national trust bank charter differs from a standard state-level money transmitter license. It grants a company the ability to operate across all 50 states under one federal regulatory framework. This structure is often preferred by firms seeking to offer custody services at scale without navigating a patchwork of state rules.
Custody has become a central concern for institutions entering the digital asset space. Banks, asset managers, and corporate treasuries increasingly require regulated custodians to hold crypto assets on their behalf. A federally chartered trust bank can offer institutional clients a level of regulatory assurance that unregulated custodians cannot match.
The OCC has issued a limited number of national trust bank charters to crypto-focused firms in recent years. Each approval has been viewed as a signal of growing acceptance of digital assets within the traditional banking system. Ripple's approval places it among a small group of companies authorized to provide this type of service at the federal level.
Ripple has spent years building relationships with regulators and financial institutions. The company has pursued banking licenses and partnerships in multiple jurisdictions as part of a broader strategy to position itself as infrastructure for institutional finance. A national trust charter supports that strategy by giving Ripple a regulated vehicle for custody, payments, and related services.
The approval comes amid continued regulatory engagement between crypto firms and US banking authorities. The OCC has periodically updated its guidance on how national banks may engage with digital assets. Final approval of a trust bank charter typically follows an extended review process involving capital requirements, governance standards, and risk management frameworks.
<h2 id="market-impact">Market Impact</h2>
The approval could strengthen Ripple's position in the institutional custody market, where competition has grown among chartered trust banks and established custodians. Institutions seeking regulated custody options for digital assets may view the charter as a factor when selecting service providers.
The development also reflects a broader trend of crypto firms pursuing federal bank charters rather than relying solely on state licenses. Continued approvals of this kind could encourage other digital asset companies to pursue similar federal regulatory pathways in the United States.
The final OCC approval gives Ripple a federally regulated foundation for its custody business, reinforcing the company's push into institutional financial infrastructure.
