 In response to what’s been labelled a preordained and stage-managed electoral victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin, exiled opposition leader <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://twitter.com/mark_feygin?lang=en">Mark Feygin</a> has initiated an anonymous, blockchain-powered referendum to gauge public sentiment.&nbsp;

The referendum, which will be conducted through the Russia2024 app, built with Rarimo’s Freedom Tool, seeks to provide Russians with a platform to express dissent against Putin’s reelection. Utilising the Arbitrum blockchain and zero-knowledge cryptography, the platform ensures voters’ anonymity, which is crucial in a country where public criticism can have dire consequences.&nbsp; 
Feygin, a former lawyer for the protest collective <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://twitter.com/pussyrrriot?lang=en">Pussy Riot</a>, emphasised the need for reliable, surveillance-proof avenues for protest and polling amidst growing risks for dissenters in Russia. The initiative comes amidst legal challenges, with Russian authorities placing Feygin on their <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://verstka.media/marka-feigina-obyavili-v-rozysk">wanted list</a> for allegedly violating wartime censorship laws by spreading <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2023/10/16/russias-lavrov-to-visit-north-korea-on-wednesday-moscow-a82772">“fake news”</a> about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp; 
Feygin, who fled Russia years ago and was labelled a <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://verstka.media/marka-feigina-obyavili-v-rozysk">foreign agent</a> in 2022, faces charges that could result in up to 15 years in prison. Despite legal hurdles, Feygin remains resolute, citing the importance of providing Russians with a voice amidst growing political repression.&nbsp; 
The referendum, while symbolic, aims to highlight widespread discontent with Putin’s regime and provide a glimmer of hope for those advocating for democratic change in Russia. As tensions escalate with Ukraine and Putin’s grip on power tightens, the success of such initiatives becomes increasingly crucial in challenging authoritarian rule and advocating for the rights of Russian citizens to express their views freely and without fear of reprisal. 
Feygin’s blockchain-based referendum has garnered attention and support from the international community, with many human rights organisations praising the initiative as a bold step towards promoting democratic principles in Russia.
