Minecraft Bans NFTs from Game Over Fears They Create 'Scarcity and Exclusion'

Minecraft has announced that it's banning NFTs from its game.

In updated guidelines, the platform says non-fungible tokens "can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with the spirit of Minecraft."

And the company declared that the speculative nature of crypto collectibles "takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players."

Play-to-earn games have been widely criticized for this exact reason, and several major brands have suffered a backlash after announcing plans to embrace NFTs.

Minecraft is now warning that blockchain technology cannot be integrated into its applications — and NFTs associated with in-game content such as worlds and skins is forbidden.

However, the brand says it intends to keep a close eye on how the sector evolves, and that it might change its mind if the technology becomes more secure, practical and inclusive.
