John McAfee was worth nothing when he died and had spent most of his $100 million fortune on a series of “bizarre” properties, a biographer has claimed.

Mark Eglinton had collaborated with the antivirus software pioneer for six months — and says that the entrepreneur was also unable to pay the fee advance they had agreed.

According to Mail Online, McAfee had told him:

“I can’t do it, my financial situation is worse than yours.”

It is believed that the entrepreneur owned properties in Belize, Colorado, Hawaii, Texas, Colorado and Tennessee — but ended up having to sell them at a sizeable loss when the recession hit.

One compound that had been valued at $25 million ended up selling at an auction for just $5.8 million.

Eglinton’s claims would chime with one of the last tweets that McAfee wrote, which said:

“The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”

Janice McAfee Reacts

McAfee was found dead in his Spanish jail cell — hours after a court there ruled that he could be extradited to the U.S. to face tax evasion charges.

Although a post-mortem examination has suggested that he killed himself, his wife Janice has cast doubt on this.

Reacting to the Daily Mail’s report, she tweeted:

“John spoke about being broke numerous times in interviews as well as tweeting about it. This was not John's first time being without money & he was not suicidal because of it. Actually it was quite the opposite. He never felt more free.”

On Friday, she also confirmed that she has received the police report concerning the events surrounding her husband’s death, adding:

“Once the lawyers and myself have had a chance to go over them I will share with you all what I can.”
