One of Ethereum’s co-founders has announced that he is quitting the world of crypto — in part because he fears for his safety.

According to Bloomberg, Anthony Di Iorio has had a security team for the past four years, meaning that there’s someone traveling with him wherever he goes. The 48-year-old told the news outlet:

“It’s got a risk profile that I am not too enthused about. I don’t feel necessarily safe in this space. If I was focused on larger problems, I think I’d be safer.”

Di Iorio founded the Canada-based software development company Decentral, but he’s now planning to sell it. He estimates it could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, yet plans to sell it for cash or equity rather than crypto.

Explaining that he won’t be involved in funding any further blockchain projects, Di Iorio added:

“I want to diversify to not being a crypto guy, but being a guy tackling complex problems.”

And in a remark that could be regarded as parting shot against the digital assets sector, he described crypto as a “small percentage of what the world needs.”

Disillusioned?

Di Iorio was one of the eight people who co-founded Ethereum, with Vitalik Buterin perhaps serving as the best known.

A growing number of entrepreneurs and developers who were involved in the early days of crypto have ended up taking a step back.

Dogecoin co-creator Jackson Palmer was one of them — and just last week, he wrote on Twitter that he had no plans to return to the crypto space at all.

He described the industry as centralized, right wing, and controlled by a small number of wealthy people who have sold a “false promise” that retail investors will one day get rich from digital assets.
