Solana Release Brings Proposed Fixes to Network Congestion Issues
The Anza team, which emerged from Solana Labs earlier this year, has unveiled potential solutions to address the growing congestion issues on the Solana network. In version 1.18.11 of its validator client, Anza proposes fixes aimed at alleviating the ongoing problems. However, it is important to note that these fixes are not expected to be a complete resolution, but rather an initial step towards improvement. Anza states that further enhancements will be introduced in version 1.18.

The network congestion has caused failed transactions and basic functionalities on the Solana network, coinciding with increased trading activities in memecoins and other tokens. While the surge in network demand has been a contributing factor, other potential causes include a Solana protocol similar to Bitcoin mining and allegations that infrastructure firms have exploited a bug for their advantage.

Austin Federa, Head of Strategy at the Solana Foundation, tweeted last week that the known bottleneck in the Agave validator client's QUIC implementation has been identified as the root cause of the network's issues. Although it was initially planned to be addressed in the future, the rising network demand has accelerated the need for a fix.

While one-third of all validators have now adopted the v1.17.31 version of the validator client, data from blockchain explorer Solana Beach reveals that version 1.17.28 remains the most widely used among validator operators, running on nearly 49% of all machines. The impact of the proposed fixes will only be fully understood once they have undergone thorough testing in a production environment.
