It came as quite a surprise when two famous economists, Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, suggested that the creator of Ethereum should be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for the year 2024.

In their podcast, Marginal Revolution, on October 8, they argued his candidature, mooting discussions between conventional economics and novelty in cryptocurrency.

Cowen, defending a somewhat unusual choice, pointed to Buterin's work in monetary economics.

"Vitalik built a platform, created a currency, you could say, refuted Mises' regression theorem in the process, obviously following in the footsteps of Satoshi," Cowen said. "My goodness, what does someone have to do to get a Nobel Prize?"

Tabarrok seconded this sentiment, adding that Buterin is still very involved in the development of Ethereum, from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake.

He compared this technological feat to "those videos of these guys in Saudi Arabia where they change the car tires while the car is moving," underlining how massive and complicated this was.

The economists also discussed Buterin's character in and out of the cryptocurrency community, citing his intelligence and amiable personality as reasons he is representative of the space.

The duo continued by stating that Buterin's contributions to both crypto and blockchain are matched only by Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous and anonymous founder of Bitcoin.
