Buenos Aires Will Be Use Blockchain-based Digital Identity Documents
Buenos Aires is launching an ambitious blockchain integration programme to provide people with digital access to identity documents. Citizens will be able to store birth certificates, marriage records, income proofs, and academic certificates in digital wallets powered by Extrimian's QuarkID protocol beginning in October.
The wallets, which are based on the Ethereum zero-knowledge rollup scaling solution zkSync Era, would enable self-sovereign control of credentials with settlement on the underlying blockchain. The system is intended to be a public good that provides safer, more efficient government services.
The project, according to Buenos Aires Secretary of Innovation Diego Fernandez, establishes Argentina's capital as one of the first cities in the world to use distributed ledger technology for the benefit of their citizens. Guillermo Villanueva, CEO of Extrimian, praised the "monumental step" towards a safer, more efficient future in Latin America.
