Own The Doge, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), has recently announced that it has obtained the legal rights to the beloved and iconic Doge meme image associated with Dogecoin. John Monarch and 'Tridog' revealed that they successfully negotiated an agreement with Sato Atsuko, the owner of Kabosu, the 18-year-old Shiba Inu who gained popularity for her perplexed expression while sitting on a couch. Through this deal, Own The Doge has acquired exclusive licensing and rights to the Doge image, effectively giving them control over the utilization of the meme in the crypto space and related merchandise.

Tridog shared their belief that the agreement brings much-needed clarity to the copyright status of the Doge image, which has remained uncertain for quite some time. With this newfound clarity, the project sees exciting opportunities for potential partnerships with prominent brands. The negotiations with Sato began approximately three years ago and involved collaboration with legal experts from both Japan and the United States.

As part of their efforts to celebrate the Doge meme's rich history and its evolution within and beyond the crypto space, Own The Doge has already released a captivating documentary. The documentary explores the origins of the Doge image and its journey into popular culture. Tridog emphasized that the DAO does not intend to enforce its copyright claim on existing users or brands that have been utilizing the image to promote the ethos of "doing only good everyday," which has become synonymous with Dogecoin.

The Doge meme image traces its roots back to 2010 when Sato captured a casual snapshot of Kabosu sitting on a yellow sofa in her Japanese home. Monarch claims to have been the first to use the term 'Doge' on social media, which eventually led to the creation of a plethora of memes, the emergence of the Dogecoin token, and the development of various crypto-themed merchandise.
