What Is Known About the Bithumb Breach

Bithumb is analyzing the exact scope of the leak, including the possibility that member information was included, according to Yonhap. The report did not mention any loss of customer crypto or funds.

The report did not say what kind of personal information was taken or how many people were affected.

Bithumb, a South Korean centralized exchange, has set a target of an initial public offering in 2028.

South Korean Regulator Tracks Wider Hacking Wave

The Financial Supervisory Service also learned of hacking intrusions at asset manager Mirae Asset Global Investments and brokerage Daishin Securities, Yonhap reported. Daishin said personal and credit information for 38,490 customers was leaked.

The intrusions followed one at Mirae Asset Life on Monday, leaving nearly every major financial sector except card companies exposed to recent attacks, according to the report.

"As artificial intelligence is used as a hacking tool, security vulnerabilities will be easily detected and simultaneous attacks will become the norm," Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin said at a meeting with the chairs of eight bank holding companies, according to Yonhap.

Bithumb has not yet determined whether member data was involved. Exchanges hold customer identity data collected for KYC checks, which can be used in targeted scams if leaked.
Crypto hacks reached $1.18 billion in the third quarter, CoinMarketCap reported this month.
