The US Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Examinations named tokenization among the risks tied to evolving market infrastructure in its fiscal 2027 examination priorities, released on Friday.
Examiners will look at tokenization in reviews of clearing agencies, and at tokenization of securities in reviews under Regulation SCI, according to the 20-page report.
The report does not mention crypto or digital assets, and the division's fiscal 2026 priorities did not mention tokenization.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has added tokenization to the areas its examiners will focus on in fiscal 2027, while its annual priorities report again makes no mention of crypto assets.
The priorities help guide the risk-based program the SEC's Division of Examinations uses to check
regulatory compliance across more than 34,000 registrants, and tokenization now appears in two sections of the report.
Key areas of focus include "risks associated with evolving market infrastructure, including Treasury clearing reforms, tokenization, and related developments," the SEC said in a
press release on Friday.

Examinations of clearing agencies will focus on high-risk areas "including risk management of defaults, recovery and wind-down, securities lending, operations, and tokenization," according to the division's
report.
Reviews under Regulation SCI, short for Systems Compliance and Integrity, will focus on emerging trends "including SI, tokenization of securities, extended trading hours, and quantum computing," the report said. The report uses SI as shorthand for super intelligence, which the SEC's release lists among emerging technologies.
The 20-page report does not use the words crypto or digital asset. The division's
fiscal 2026 priorities did not mention crypto either, and did not mention tokenization.
"The markets we oversee continue to evolve rapidly, and the examination program must evolve with them," said Keith Cassidy, director of the Division of Examinations. The division said the priorities are not an exhaustive list of the matters examiners will review during fiscal 2027.
The SEC issued an innovation exemption in September for trading tokenized stocks, a form of
tokenized securities. OKXICE, a venture of OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, has since drawn
objections from 16 companies to tokenizing their shares, a count
Reuters reported on Friday had risen to 22.
The agency is also weighing feedback on its proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, after a
comment period that closed on Oct. 20 drew requests for revisions from crypto firms, law firms and Wall Street trade group SIFMA.
