Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has launched its first major consumer product: a wallet app that allows users to store and transfer crypto tokens via the Polygon blockchain. The app, which is currently in beta testing and is called World App, is part of Worldcoin's ambitious vision to create a global identity and financial network that gives ownership and access to the global economy to everyone, regardless of their country or background.

Worldcoin aims to achieve this vision by distributing its tokens for free to anyone who proves they are a real and unique person using a device called the Orb, which scans the user's eye. The Orb is designed to protect the user's privacy while ensuring that each person can only claim one share of Worldcoin. According to Worldcoin's website, the project expects to launch in the first half of 2023.

For now, the point of World App is to operate as an extremely user-friendly crypto wallet for the masses, but it will eventually integrate more features focused on Worldcoin and World ID. World ID is a digital identity system based on providing proof that a user is a human without revealing one’s true, real-world identity. The app also allows users to participate in the governance of the Worldcoin protocol, which is an open-source project supported by a global community of developers, individuals, economists and technologists.
