Nevertheless, experts, especially artists, have also become increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of NFTs and have taken proactive measures to address climate change as well as reduce their carbon footprint associated with NFTs.<h2 id="header-0">Do NFTs negatively impact the environment?</h2>Although the environment may not be immediately impacted by NFTs, the process of minting them can have a substantial environmental impact. On a proof-of-work blockchain, this triggers a competition among miners within the network to validate the transaction and earn the blockchain reward. The network focuses on processing one block at a time, with an average block time of around 10 minutes.</li><li>Energy consumption: The significant energy requirement stems from the extensive proof-of-work network functioning on a single block at a time, where all miners strive to generate a lower number.</li></ol><h3 id="strong-nfts-processed-via-proof-of-stake-strong">NFTs processed via Proof-of-Stake</h3>When it comes to proof-of-stake blockchains, the process of NFTs through the marketplace remains the same until the transaction initiation:<ol><li>Transaction queuing: The transaction is added to the network&#39;s queue.</li><li>Validator assignment: A validator, who has staked 32 ETH, is randomly selected to validate the transaction. Unlike proof-of-work, where multiple miners compete, only one validator performs the validation process.</li><li>Reduced energy consumption: Since only one validator carries out the task, the energy consumption is significantly lower. In fact, Ethereum claims that the proof-of-stake consensus now utilizes 99.95% less energy compared to the previous proof-of-work mechanism.</li><li>Transaction verification and confirmation: The assigned validator verifies the transaction and broadcasts the information to other validators. These validators then vote to confirm the block and the transaction.</li></ol>This process does not involve competitive number generation as seen in proof-of-work, resulting in considerably lower energy usage.
