Solana, the blockchain platform renowned for its high-speed transactions and growing DeFi ecosystem, faced a hiccup on Tuesday as its operations experienced a <a href="https://news.todayq.com/solana-suffers-over-4-decline-amid-temporary-network-halt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">temporary halt</a>. Commencing at 09:53 UTC, the disruption persisted for about five hours, marking the first outage this year for the network. They took to X (formerly Twitter) informing, “The outage began at approximately 09:53 UTC, lasting 5 hours. Core contributors are working on a root cause report, which will be made available once complete.” The Solana team quickly started looking into what caused the problem to figure it out. To help explain the outage, <a href="https://news.todayq.com/solana-co-founder-cites-biggest-threat-to-ether/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Anatoly Yakovenko</a>, the CEO of Solana Labs, retweeted a post by Matthew Siegel.

According to reports from Matthew Siegel, head of digital assets research at VanEck, the disruption stemmed from a failure in the Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF). It is an important mechanism responsible for deploying, upgrading, and executing programs on Solana. In thetweet, he said, “This seems to relate to a previous SMID (Solana Improvement Proposal) that altered some of the features including the adding a blocker to stop metadata from being used in the BPF because it was no longer needed.”&nbsp; 
While a fix had been developed and tested on the network’s testnet, it had not yet been implemented on the mainnet, leaving a vulnerability that was exploited, leading to the outage. The resolve and market condition 
To address the issue, developers swiftly rewrote the problematic BPF code lines on the development network. However, implementing this solution necessitated updating the core software utilized by all participants on the Solana network. Once the updates were applied, normal network operations resumed, marking a successful resolution to the disruption.
Despite the temporary setback, confidence in Solana’s resilience remains high. Siegel anticipates a surge in DeFi activity following the network’s restart, particularly as arbitrage bots capitalize on opportunities in the market.
In the aftermath of the disruption, Solana’s real-time performance reflects a minor downturn, with SOL trading at $95.46, down 0.55% over the past day. The market cap has experienced a marginal decrease of 0.43%, currently standing at $41,691,511,421. However, trading volume has seen an uptick of 18.76%, reaching $1,667,478,568 over the past 24 hours. With a circulating supply of 436,748,016 SOL and a total supply of 568,875,219 SOL, Solana’s fully diluted market cap is estimated at $54,302,739,106.
