After a decade of closure, news circulating on social media reveals that creditors of the now-defunct Japanese Bitcoin (BTC) exchange Mt. Gox crypto is finally getting reimbursed. As per the reports, these repayments are being made in fiat currency for users after several delays in repayment.&nbsp;
Users who have had their funds stuck since the exchange’s shutdown in February 2014 are sharing their experiences of receiving payments, particularly in Japanese Yen via PayPal or bank transfer, as seen in posts on the <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgoxinsolvency/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Reddit page</a> r/mtgoxinsolvency. One user even provided a screenshot of the PayPal receipt as confirmation of the repayment.
The developing events provide a glimmer of hope, indicating that the eagerly awaited repayments could soon materialize as a concrete reality for many involved parties.

Although there is no specific timing of repayments to individual rehabilitation creditors, the repayments are expected to continue in 2024. The repayments to creditors will be done in several tranches.
According to a user, only part of his 0.125 BTC was repaid. The user <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgoxinsolvency/comments/18r0w98/well_got_some_money_at_least/?utm_source=embedv2&amp;utm_medium=post_embed&amp;utm_content=post_body&amp;embed_host_url=https://d-38420261743956254583.ampproject.net/2312012346000/frame.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">received</a> a total of 30,283 yen (worth $200 at the current exchange rate leaving a balance of about $748).

The recent development signifies the initial phase of repayments for all creditors. Notably, in September, Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee recovering funds on behalf of <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/mt-gox-adjusts-payment-deadline-details/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Mt Gox formally adjusted the repayment deadline</a> for rehabilitation creditor repayments from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2024.
At the time, the trustee said it acquired the approval of the Tokyo District Court, to revise the deadlines for Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment, and Intermediate Repayment. Additionally, Kobayashi explained that for rehabilitation creditors who had supplied the required information, repayments would commence as early as the year’s end.&nbsp;
Recall that the platform had <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/mt-gox-extends-deadline-for-registration-and-postpones-repayment/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">extended the window for registration</a> to allow users interested in the Early Lump-Sum Repayment to complete their registration.

Before its collapse, Mt. Gox was the largest Bitcoin exchange, processing about 70% of the world’s Bitcoin transactions. In February 2014, Mt. Gox halted trading, shut down its website and exchange operations, and filed for bankruptcy protection against its creditors after it failed to recover from the impact of its hack.
The exchange transitioned from bankruptcy proceedings to civil rehabilitation, a debtor-friendly form of corporate restructuring, in 2018, meaning creditors will receive BTC instead of a fiat sum.
