Natural historian and broadcaster David Attenborough has come up with another virtual reality (VR) documentary dubbed Galapagos VR in collaboration with Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook).&nbsp;
The series will explore the volcanic islands located in Ecuador, Galapagos. The place is known for its wildlife. The father of evolution, Charles Darwin, drew inspiration from the place for his prominent Theory of Evolution.

Meta Platforms explains the experience as “combining stylized animation with incredible VR set extension and high-quality 3D video, this unique three-part series flies through thousands of years of evolution on this unique archipelago.” Atlantic Productions, a British production company, has produced the three-part series.
The studio has produced VR documentaries like Kingdom of Plants, Conquest of Skies, First Life, and more, garnering over 3 Million views. Moreover, it has produced programs for channels like Animal Planet, National Geographic, Discovery, and more. In 2019, it was developing a documentary affiliated to exploring the RMS Titanic shipwreck.
Galapagos VR will use Quillustrations, <a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2023/11/21/flow-crypto-prediction-will-flow-price-sustain-above-200-ema/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">3D illustrations</a> created through the virtual reality app Quill. David Attenborough commented on its release, saying that, “This small group of islands has revealed in microcosm the processes that have shaped all life on Earth. Unlike many other tropical islands elsewhere, 95% of the Galapagos biodiversity still survives. But only just. We have the chance to bring back the full glory of this fragile ecosystem.”
Virtual reality and augmented reality (AR) are still nascent technologies. There are still few AR/VR users globally according to data aggregator Statista. VR segment is expected to reach nearly 100 Million users while AR, has 23 Million. Both segments are anticipated to surpass 100 Million by 2027.
Both are considered essential to access the metaverse. No definition regarding the concept has been solidified to this date. Scientific research defines it as, “a three-dimensional online environment in which users represented by avatars interact with each other in virtual spaces decoupled from the real physical world.” Nearly 400 Million users delve into the metaverse currently.
However, bringing it from concept to reality is a long shot. A viable metaverse will require realism to provide an immersive experience to users. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, was trolled over his low-resolution selfie on the photo-sharing app Instagram.
Nonetheless, the Meta boss responded by posting another image of his Metaverse avatar with updated graphics. He explained that Meta’s graphics are “capable of much more — even on headsets — and Horizon is improving very quickly.”&nbsp;
Recently, he appeared in an interview with American computer scientist, Lex Fridman, to showcase photorealistic avatars rendered by the company’s latest head-mounted device (HMD), Meta Quest 3.
Over 9 Million AR and VR devices were shipped globally. The number is expected to decline to about 7.5 Million this year. Another research shows shipments could grow by manifold to nearly 90 Million by 2026.
