Fairfax County, Virginia, in an ambitious move, is set to distribute $2 million, with no conditions attached, in a basic income pilot program. 180 families will benefit, receiving $750 monthly for 15 months. This pilot is part of a broader move across the U.S., with several other trials in motion, aiming to allocate over $200 million to evaluate the efficacy of basic income schemes for individuals grappling with financial challenges. 
The Fairfax County Economic Mobility Pilot (FCEMP) application window is slated to be open from September 23rd to October 3rd. To qualify, applicants must be 18 or older, have a child aged 16 or below, and possess a household income that aligns with 150% to 250% of the 2023 Federal Poverty Level (FPL). 
Significantly, the primary objective of this pilot is multifaceted. It aims to ascertain if direct cash transfers can enhance recipients’ mental and physical well-being, fortify performance in academic settings, bolster food and housing security, and assist individuals in securing full-time employment. 
Moreover, the underlying philosophy of FCEMP resonates with other basic income initiatives. By empowering residents with financial autonomy, the program seeks to instill a sense of dignity and self-determination, enabling them to dictate their life and expenditure choices. However, capturing baseline data of families enrolled in FCEMP is essential for refining and optimizing the program in the long run. Consequently, Fairfax County has emphasized the significance of the pilot’s research component. The insights derived will be instrumental in gauging the tangible impact of cash assistance on participants and will guide decisions regarding the program’s future expansion or continuity.
