<a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/majning-bitkoina-v-kyrgyzstane-novye-vozmozhnosti-dlya-ekonomiki-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kyrgyzstan</a>'s government is backing Bitcoin mining with access to low-cost electricity from a state-owned hydro power plant. They've signed an MoU with <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/rossiya-sravnyalas-s-ssha-po-tempam-rosta-majninga-kriptovalyut/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BitRiver</a>, a large Russian Bitcoin mining company. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/rossiya-sravnyalas-s-ssha-po-tempam-rosta-majninga-kriptovalyut/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BitRiver</a> can use 300 MW of electricity from the 1,200 MW Toktogul hydro power plant, the country's largest, according to <a href="https://www.tekedia.com/binance-secures-operational-mvp-license-in-dubai-kyrgyzstan-expands-bitcoin-mining/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">tekedia</a>. 
As part of the deal, <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/rossiya-sravnyalas-s-ssha-po-tempam-rosta-majninga-kriptovalyut/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BitRiver</a> will invest in a data center near the plant. The center is expected to be operational by the end of 2022 and will create hundreds of jobs. 
This move aims to boost the economy, hit hard by Covid-19 and political instability. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/majning-bitkoina-v-kyrgyzstane-novye-vozmozhnosti-dlya-ekonomiki-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kyrgyzstan</a>'s GDP contracted 8% in 2020. By promoting Bitcoin mining, the government hopes to diversify energy exports, currently dependent on selling electricity to neighbors. 
<a href="https://ultramining.com/news/rossiya-sravnyalas-s-ssha-po-tempam-rosta-majninga-kriptovalyut/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BitRiver</a>'s CEO Igor Runets praised <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/majning-bitkoina-v-kyrgyzstane-novye-vozmozhnosti-dlya-ekonomiki-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kyrgyzstan</a>'s low <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/upcoming-bitcoin-halving-threatens-mining-profitability-analysts-warn/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">electricity prices</a> and government cooperation. He sees great potential for the country as a key Bitcoin mining hub in Central Asia. 
However, environmental concerns accompany Bitcoin mining. Although hydro power is cleaner than fossil fuels, it can disrupt ecosystems and is vulnerable to climate change. 
Balancing economic gains with environmental impact will be crucial. Solutions may include energy efficiency, renewable sources, and alternative consensus mechanisms in the Bitcoin network.
