The crypto-friendly Opera web browser now supports .crypto blockchain addresses on all of the major desktop and mobile operating systems.

The browser first supported cryptocurrencies back in 2019, when it added a built-in wallet. In this, it competes with blockchain-based Brave.

The full integration with Unstoppable Domains’ .crypto provides Opera users with “seamless access to the decentralized web,” the browser firm said in an April 28 release, adding:
“Without downloading a browser extension, users can now access decentralized websites hosted via IPFS using Unstoppable Domains' popular .crypto NFT addresses.”

It is now available on all Opera browsers, including those for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux.

A Big Milestone

Opera, which said it had 320 million monthly active users across all browsers, is the sixth-most popular browser, with 2.13% market share worldwide as of March, according to Statista.

The .crypto domain names are actually non-fungible tokens on Ethereum that grant token-holders full rights to the domain name. They also act as cryptocurrency wallet, replacing complex alphanumeric addresses with a simple domain name.

The addition of the Opera browser gives people a simple way to own NFT domains and access the IPFS-powered decentralized web, also known as Web3, said Matthew Gould, CEO at Unstoppable Domains. He added:
"These domains simplify the process of transacting with a .crypto wallet, eliminating the need to remember a lengthy wallet address. Since we're still in the early days of decentralized domains, people can still claim their preferred .crypto username."

Opera said its embrace of Unstoppable Domains is a natural progression of its goal of giving everyone access to the full web. Maciej Kocemba, product director at Opera, explained:

"We have always supported web innovation, and the decentralized web or Web3 is the natural next wave. Making Unstoppable Domains accessible in the Opera browsers means our users can try blockchain technologies for themselves. Registering your .crypto domain, which is forever yours, is a great first step into Web3. It also gives people a chance to own an NFT."
