Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is detached from the multiverse and is really delightful

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is the third and final instalment in the Guardians of the Galaxy film series. The film is directed by James Gunn (whose professional journey in recent years has been quite amazing) and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, Maria Bakalova, and Chukwudi Iwuji.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is a fun and action-packed film that advances away from MCU’s overwhelming focus on the multiverse, as it has always had a distinctive personality. The film features the same great cast as the previous films, delivering great performances. The film also has a great sense of humour and is full of memorable moments.

The plot – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

This instalment, and possibly the finale, picks up where the previous film left off in 2017 and begins with rebuilding, with the Guardians of the Galaxy still reeling from the loss of Gamora.
At Knowhere (The Guardians’ home), the Guardians of the Galaxy are attacked by Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), a synthetic humanoid of devastating power created by their high priestess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki).

After Adam overpowers them and seriously wounds Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Nebula stabs him, and he is forced to flee. But, the Guardians cannot tend to Rocket‘s wounds due to a kill switch, made by the company Orgocorp, embedded in him. They travel to Orgocorp’s headquarters to find the override code.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” tells two stories simultaneously. One is set in the present and follows the current Guardians going on an adventure to save a dying Rocket. The other traces Rocket’s origins in flashback.

The narrative sights were set on Rocket (Bradley Cooper) ever since Vol. 2’s stirring final scene.
We’ve seen Star-Lord and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Groot (Vin Diesel) and Drax (Dave Bautista) and Rocket and Kraglin (Sean Gunn) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) between now and when Vol. 1 hit the theatres, in “Avengers” movies and briefly in the latest “Thor”, but other than the Christmas holiday special, this is the first time the guardians are back together.
What we like:
  • The cast was great. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, Maria Bakalova, and Chukwudi Iwuji all delivered great performances.
  • The film had a great sense of humour. There were a lot of memorable moments that make you laugh out loud.
  • The action sequences were some of the best in the MCU. They were exciting and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
  • The film had a great emotional core. It dealt with some heavy themes such as loss and grief in a way that was both respectful and moving.
What we don’t like:
  • The film was a bit too long. It could have been trimmed down by about 20 minutes.
The film’s villain, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), was a bit underdeveloped. We may want to see more of him.

What we really think

The performances of the characters would draw high level emotions as some of them find closure.

We already felt some of Star-Lord‘s (aka Peter Quill) pain in the Infinity Saga’s two-part finale plus last Christmas’ Holiday Special, but here, you would experience an almost complete leader and an individual exhibiting genuine anger and sadness at the same time – resulting from Gamora‘s death.

It’s one of the best leading performances we’ve had in the MCU so far, up there with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans’ best.

Meanwhile, as with many other high-budget films from Hollywood, especially one like “Avatar,” or “Quantumania,” the CGI work in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” on Rocket is amazing and spiced with a good story.

For a long time, probably since “Endgame”, there is a story in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, instead of a drag mixed with bright colours and expressions – call it FX dumps.

We are literally tired of the multiverse (let’s not start with the inconsistency of the characterisation), and the FX dumps Marvel thinks will distract us from Marvel’s characters that were created to tell stories about friendship and goodness and teach children how to be better to one another.

Besides the time-displaced Gamora, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has no interest in the multiverse. It’s much better without it.
See or skip?

You’d enjoy “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”. It is a fun, action-packed film with a great cast and a lot of heart. The film’s action sequences are some of the best in the MCU, and they are sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. We highly recommend it to fans of the franchise.
