Launched on October 5, 2020 by London School of Economics graduate, Sahr Johnny, Afreum is a global, crypto-native economic ecosystem built on the Stellar blockchain. Afreum's mission is to foster true financial inclusion for disenfranchised populations in Africa, and elsewhere, and level the playing field by providing equitable access to vital blockchain financial tools such as payments, savings, loans, remittances, atomic swaps, staking, asset tokenization, and frictionless peer-to-peer transactions.

The Afreum ecosystem is powered by the AFREUM (AFR) token. In addition, the AFREUM X (AFRX) token is the incentives and governance token for the Afreum DAO. The Afreum ecosystem also features a number of stable (S tokens) and flexible (A tokens) country-specific tokens that facilitate onboarding and international transactions. The Afreum ecosystem, the AFR token, and the country tokens provide a viable alternative for financially excluded people, and the unbanked, while offering DeFi opportunities for international users.

International users are incentivized to provide liquidity through DeFi-like features such as savings and staking pools, while African users leverage Afreum's fast and inexpensive transactions to handle various financial aspects of everyday life via our growing suite of apps.
