<p><u><a href="https://c212.net/c/link/?t&#61;0&amp;l&#61;en&amp;o&#61;3695077-1&amp;h&#61;3345727840&amp;u&#61;https%3A%2F%2Fsplinterlands.com%2F&amp;a&#61;Splinterlands" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Splinterlands</a></u> is the leading blockchain video game company worldwide according to DappRadar, and is known for its elaborate fantasy-themed battle card strategies and committed community. We&#39;re thrilled to have a great conversation with Jon Monahan, VP of Sales at Splinterland, talking about the game itself and the mindset changes during the bear market.</p><h3 id="strong-1-please-make-some-introductions-of-yourself-and-your-projects-strong"><strong>1. Please make some introductions of yourself and your projects</strong></h3><p>My name is Jon Monahan and I go by 16_bit in the community. Splinterland is a gaming company that is meant to be fun. We have collected a group of the most talented people, and we have grown from a small studio to 150 employees over four and a half years. We wanted to design a Web3 game from the start. It was a bear market at that time and was a little difficult, but the two founders managed to go through. Some of their favorite games were Magic: The Gathering and HeartStone, but they love other card games as well. Splinterland was born because they want to build a fun card game but also want to take advantage of cryptocurrency technology.</p><p>Blockchain provides a couple of advantages. It provides digital ownership over your assets and it opens the door to decentralization. People have been heavily investing in games but got no value back, and all their investments would go away if the company goes away. Blockchain technology allows you to get some value back. Also, the decentralization nature could keep the game running even if the company intervened with regulations.</p><p>Right now, we have a platform that is extremely viable and scalable. We have a couple of million registered accounts, over 250,000 daily active users, over 175,000 people in our discord, 3–5millions battles per day, and over 3 billion battles in total. We are the largest decentralized app in Web3 by those metrics.</p><h3 id="strong-2-you-mentioned-that-you-started-building-your-project-in-another-bear-market-what-is-your-mindset-on-the-bear-market-does-it-affect-your-development-strong"><strong>2. You mentioned that you started building your project in another bear market. What is your mindset on the bear market? Does it affect your development?</strong></h3><p>Of course, the mindset is to “Build Market not Bear market”. We continued to develop and add to the game. Looking at history, in the last 30 years, despite recessions happening, video games have been a bit insulated. There has been a continuous demand for entertainment regardless of the market condition. If the game is fun, players will stick around. We have seen the bear market once, and we are certain that players will stick around this time as well.</p><h3 id="strong-3-have-you-guys-had-the-mindset-at-the-beginning-or-have-you-developed-it-during-the-game-development-strong"><strong>3. Have you guys had the mindset at the beginning? Or have you developed it during the game development?</strong></h3><p>The mindset was formed at the beginning. The co-founders wanted to make something fun regardless of Web2 or Web3. Back when the game was launched, the term Play2Earn did not exist yet. The mindsets of a lot of the early Web3 games are very different. I think the market learned the lesson as well, they understand that the game must have entertainment value. I think we will be seeing a lot of very different Web3 games going forward.</p><h3 id="strong-4-how-would-you-describe-your-game-what-are-some-mechanics-strong"><strong>4. How would you describe your game? What are some mechanics?</strong></h3><p>Splinterland is a collectible card game. It is very attractive if you ever played Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, or HearthStone. It is a game that borrowed a lot of concepts from those games. In Splinterland, you need to build your card collection, and then battle against an opponent and their card collection. What you will do is, before the battle, you will be given two and a half minutes to select a team from your deck and you will be given a randomly generated set of rules and conditions for that battle. The rules and conditions will change every single battle which forces you to adjust your strategy and select different combinations of cards. It is a really strategically heavy but fun game.</p><p>You pick a team and summon up to 6 monster cards from your collection. Actually, the battle happens instantly, but you can watch how the battle plays out as an auto-battle, which shows how you win or how you lose and you can improve on that. It is a very easy game to get your hands on, but a difficult game to master.</p><p>The incentive plays out in the form of different leagues. You start with a novice and then go to Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Champion. To rank up, you have to build your card collection and your performance. As you are advancing into higher leagues, you will also be facing higher opponents with better skills and card collections, and you need to improve your card to defeat them. Because the earnings are much higher in higher leagues, players are incentivized to level up, which motivates them to build better card collections.You will receive two things from battles. One is SPS, which is our governance token, and you will also be able to win rewards, which will determine how many chests you can open. The chest contains cards, which are NFTs, and it is quite valuable.</p><p>Joining a guild would amplify all these returns. There are many guilds outside of Splinterland and there are a lot of guilds inside Splinterland, and you can have up to 30 people in a guild once the guild is fully leveled up. Once you join a guild, you can participate in Guild Brawls, which give you a chance to level up your buildings and accumulate your reputation.</p><h3 id="strong-5-does-it-have-a-leaderboard-for-the-guild-something-of-a-social-recognition-strong"><strong>5. Does it have a leaderboard for the guild, something of a social recognition?</strong></h3><p>Yes, we do, and guilds can host tournaments as well. We have hosted many tournaments and have given away over $ 6 million in prizes. There are other guilds or organizations that come in and start a tournament and do a giveaway using their token.</p><h3 id="strong-6-you-sound-like-there-s-a-collaboration-between-the-nfts-projects-with-splinterland-do-they-contribute-to-the-card-designing-strong"><strong>6. You sound like there’s a collaboration between the NFTs projects with Splinterland, do they contribute to the card designing?</strong></h3><p>We have done collaborations where certain community members were able to help to design new cards. We have also done specific and special promotions. We did a collaboration with a hip-hop artist by the name of Waka Flocka Flame. We actually created the Waka Spirit Blade character and there is a summoner in the game based on Waka Flocka Flame. We are beginning to create more games and we’re starting to recognize just how valuable this could be. For example, we’re creating a new gaming ecosystem for sports games called Genesis League sports. The first game within that ecosystem will be called Genesis League Goals and it’s a collaboration with Major League Soccer Players Association in North America. So the cards in the game will be real-life players, but there will be other cards like coach cards. We offered the top 10 purchasers with design rights to their coach cards. You can make a Charles card or a Claire card or it could be or could be something that’s branded for CARV.</p><h3 id="strong-7-is-the-sports-card-game-related-to-spinterlands-or-is-it-just-another-project-where-gamers-can-gain-different-game-experiences-strong"><strong>7. Is the sports card game related to Spinterlands? Or is it just another project where gamers can gain different game experiences?</strong></h3><p>They will have a different game experience. It’s going to be built on the same tech stack. What we realize is that 4 and a half years of development on the Splinterlands platform makes it incredibly stable and scalable. So, it gives us the ability to use that same tech stack to build additional games.</p><p>But if we’re going to build a soccer football-oriented game, it will look different. There are multiple different types of game formats, using the same technology that we’ve built. But they look and feel different regarding the game mechanics.</p><p>And we intend to have additional sports organizations join as well. We have a few announcements that we’re getting ready to make.</p><h3 id="strong-8-it-sounds-like-you-have-more-collaboration-with-these-projects-from-the-sports-industry-i-think-that-opens-up-a-lot-of-opportunities-for-you-and-can-provide-more-income-for-sure-strong"><strong>8. It sounds like you have more collaboration with these projects from the Sports industry. I think that opens up a lot of opportunities for you and can provide more income for sure.</strong></h3><p>Our mission is to help drive mass adoption of Web 3. Through the context of gaming, these sports leagues like Major League Soccer have existing fan bases that are quite large. We build these games to target them and intend to make these fans join our games easily without knowing how Web 3 technology works. Let’s start to make things as attractive as possible for Web 2 if we align with well-known IPs.</p><p>But to attract Web 3 communities, we have a project called Runi. Runi will be our first Ethereum-based NFT which is going to meet us on OpenSea.</p><h3 id="strong-9-could-you-disclose-more-information-about-runi-nft-strong"><strong>9. Could you disclose more information about Runi NFT?</strong></h3><p>If you are an NFT collector, Runi will be very familiar to you, each of which is composed of 10 layers and completely unique from others. Runi itself has hundreds of different customization possibilities. Thus you can break components of it and replace it by another slot. For example, a Runi might hold a sword. But you can sell the sword on OpenSea and replace it with a pickle. The total amount of Runi is 6500.</p><p>Additionally, Runi bridged Ethereum into Hive which is the chain where Splinterlands is on. We launched a pre-sale of 2000 spots of 6500 Runi. It sold out in 39 seconds, which gives us a sense of enthusiasm.</p><h3 id="strong-10-these-3-projects-you-ve-mentioned-represent-different-game-genres-so-how-do-you-decide-which-area-you-should-go-into-strong"><strong>10. These 3 projects you’ve mentioned represent different game genres. So how do you decide which area you should go into?</strong></h3><p>There are no certain rules that we stay consistent with. We want to keep with our core competencies, the platform. At the same time, we try to find new and unique ways to use that tech stack, delivering new games.</p><p>We announced earlier this year that we’re going to build a game for Warner Music Group, which has a lot of top musicians globally. That game might be a much more lightweight type that can be set on your phone.
