X Platform Launches Smart Cashtags for Direct Crypto Trading
#X head of product Nikita Bier confirmed the social media platform will roll out Smart Cashtags within weeks, enabling users to view financial data and execute trades directly from their timeline. The announcement came during discussions about platform policies regarding third-party crypto #applications.
Bier clarified that X will not handle trade execution or operate as a brokerage service. The platform is building financial data tools and providing links to trading partners, while third-party services will manage actual transaction processing.
Christopher Park, director of X's developer platform, added that all automation and spam involving scraping or API access will face extensive evaluation. The company plans to flag and restrict bots or programs that incentivize large-scale platform manipulation, engagement farming, or unauthorized data collection.
The Smart #Cashtags feature builds on X's existing ticker system where users add dollar signs before symbols to create clickable links. Under the updated system, users can specify exact assets or smart contract addresses when posting cryptocurrency or stock tickers.
Clicking these enhanced tags will display live price charts, related posts across the platform, and direct #trading options. Early interface mockups showed integrated buy and sell buttons alongside real-time price data for selected assets.
Bier stated the API powering Smart Cashtags will operate in near real-time for any asset minted on blockchain networks. This capability allows smaller-cap tokens not listed on centralized exchanges to appear alongside traditional equities like NVDA.
The feature represents part of X's broader financial services expansion. Former CEO Linda Yaccarino announced a partnership with Visa in January 2025 to launch X Money, a digital wallet for #peer-to-peer payments.
