According to Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin, the blockchain now has an updated roadmap for the coming year but with only&nbsp;“relatively few changes” from the 2023 version.&nbsp;Buterin shared the Ethereum 2024 roadmap where he pointed out the core priorities that the blockchain will focus on in the coming year.&nbsp;
“As Ethereum’s technical path forward continues to solidify, there are relatively few changes,” the Ethereum co-founder pointed out.
<h2 id="b-ethereum-to-focus-on-six-priorities-including-the-merge-b">Ethereum to Focus on Six Priorities Including The Merge&nbsp;</h2>
He <a href="https://twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/1741190491578810445?s=20" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">highlighted</a> six of these priorities with annotations and diagrams in a detailed chart shared on X.
The six main components include The Merge (the transition from a Proof-of-Work consensus algorithm to a Proof-of-Stake mechanism) and the Surge (a goal of 100,000 transactions per second across Ethereum and its Layer 2 networks).&nbsp;

Also, there is the Scourge (mitigating risks around MEV and liquid pooling), the Verge (easier block verification), the Purge (simplifying the protocol), and the Splurge (everything else). These will form the bedrock of the protocol’s innovations moving forward.
<h2 id="b-buterin-endorses-single-slot-finality-for-ethereum-s-pos-b">Buterin Endorses Single Slot Finality For Ethereum’s PoS</h2>
In addition, Buterin endorsed single slot finality (SSF) as the easiest approach to tackling the current challenges of the Ethereum PoS design. This Finality solution is geared towards ensuring that any adjustment to a blockchain block is not reversible unless a minimum of 33% of the total staked ETH is burned&nbsp;
In September 2022, the <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/consensys-ceo-believes-the-merge-is-the-3rd-biggest-event-in-the-crypto-industry/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum network went through the Merge</a>, birthing the integration of its mainnet with the PoS blockchain Beacon Chain. Before this event, it was said that energy consumption is expected to be <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/the-merge-ethereums-transition-to-pos-set-for-september-19/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">cut down by as much as 99%</a> once the Merge happens. Eventually, the move from a PoW mechanism to a PoS design led to a commendable reduction in the network’s overall energy consumption.&nbsp;
<h2 id="b-ethereum-co-founder-push-for-cypherpunk-revolution-b">Ethereum Co-founder Push For Cypherpunk Revolution&nbsp;</h2>
The release of this Ethereum roadmap comes only a few days after Buterin mentioned the <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/vitalik-buterin-plans-to-revive-ethereums-cypherpunk-values/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">revival of Ethereum’s ‘cypherpunk’ revolution</a>.&nbsp;
Based on Buterin’s statement, the Ethereum network was conceived as a “public decentralized shared hard drive” from the beginning with a cypherpunk vision. However, this was all swept under the carpet when the focus of the network was more on over-financing.
This vision included decentralization, open participation, censorship resistance, and credible neutrality. Due to how the network may have to retrace its steps from financialization, the Ethereum co-founder is hopeful that non-financial applications will thrive within the Ethereum blockchain.
