for free!</a><h2 id="header-2"></h2><h2 id="header-3">Why Verifiable Credentials and DIDs? Privacy.</h2>Web3 introduced the ability to sign-in using cryptocurrency wallets. But with crypto wallets, all the user data that a developer can request and verify is on the blockchain, limiting the types of data that can be verified.What if you need to verify users&#39; private data?No one wants their private personal data on an immutable public database.Verifiable Credentials and DIDs enable Privacy-Preserving Attestations.In order words, they allow people to prove things about themselves while retaining privacy over their data.The Verifiable Credential - like a Student ID card - is stored in a wallet app on your device, not the blockchain.When you present the Credential for verification, you can present only parts of it (Selective Disclosure) or even prove something without disclosing the data that backs up the proof (Zero-Knowledge Proofs).<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/srd-optimized-uploads/ea49d150ff844d73ab34b0c63750f494.png" />Here is an example of presenting a Verifiable Credential using Selective Disclosure. Users can present only one attribute from their Student ID cards, like their University&#39;s name, without sharing other information.DIDs take privacy even further by preventing data tracking and correlation.Here&#39;s how DIDs work:A DID is an identifying address on the blockchain. People and organisations can have DIDs.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/srd-optimized-uploads/348436ececed46cab9ee8afd18760cc7.jpg" />The University that issues you the Student ID card will use their DID&#39;s private key to sign the Verifiable Credential, attesting that they issued it.  The DID&#39;s corresponding public key will be on the blockchain, meaning anyone can inspect it to verify if that University issued the Student ID card.How do DIDs prevent tracking and correlation?You can create as many DIDs as you want, even one for each of your different digital relationships.You can associate the Student ID card credential to a DID you only use for University purposes.
