<h2 id="header-0">HOT TOPIC: Avatar lip sync and full body movement</h2><blockquote><em>Developer Diaries aim to give a transparent view to our community on how the build of Bloktopia is progressing. So, some things we share here, might not ever come to fruition, but our goal will be to set clear expectations and communicate with you all about the upcoming roadmap and priorities.</em></blockquote><p>This <a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-developer-diaries-1-1827868741ba" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">weekly Developer Diary update</a>, sees us wrap up our Avatar movement work with the final piece of the jigsaw. We have already shown overviews on <a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-developer-diaries-3-8574fd783a69" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Avatar Movement in VR</a> and <a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-developer-diaries-4-a4416e2297d5" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Hand movement in VR</a> and this week’s ‘Hot Topic’ will be Avatar lip sync and full body movement.</p><h2 id="header-1">Avatar Lip Sync and Full Body Movement</h2><p>Talking avatars engage audiences in presentations, videos, live streams, but most importantly, in avatar to avatar interactions which will be as common in the metaverse as human to human interactions IRL.</p><p>In this update, the team has added lip sync technology to the avatar which adds micro-expressions. This is to give a level of realism by doing things like manipulating the jaw and mouth. Building on the arm and body movement we have previously shared in Developer Diaries #3 and #4, we have then connected all of this together in Unity.</p><p>The lip syncing is done simply by taking the audio heard from the Oculus Quest headset’s microphone and mapping it in real-time to the avatar’s face. It does that by listening for specific phonetic sounds, which determines how the avatars mouth and lips move.</p><p>Check out the video below as our Senior Unity Developer, David, explains further:</p><react-video url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v&#61;Ac18h240gRU"></react-video><p></p><p>The next step in the journey will be to refine the animation of the avatars face when speaking, to make it as realistic and immersive as possible when seen in Bloktopia. We’ll be sharing this refined content as a later edition of Developer Diaries.</p><p>We now have Level One of Bloktopia with all the stores, and walking and talking avatars in VR. We are still to finish the networked solution which will make Bloktopia multiplayer, and then of course artwork for the VR version of Bloktopia, to make it look like our original version in HDRP. But, we now have all of the functionality we need for a human to spawn into Bloktopia VR, walk around, interact with the world and talk.</p><h2 id="header-2">AMA with CMO Paddy Carroll’s Avatar</h2><p>So with that in mind, on 9th August 2022 at 12pm UTC, our CMO Paddy Carroll will hold an AMA live from Bloktopia!</p><p>As we are still in the development stages of Bloktopia, we will be streaming this AMA via a more conventional method, with details to be shared in the near future on our social channels.
