Former U.S. President Donald Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, triggering a surge in Trump-themed memecoins and altering prediction market odds for the upcoming election.
The incident unfolded as Trump addressed supporters from the stage. According to reports, several shots were fired from an unknown direction, causing Trump to clutch his ear and drop to the ground.&nbsp;

Secret Service agents swiftly moved to protect him. In a characteristic display, Trump briefly paused while being escorted off stage to raise his fist and shout towards the crowd.
Trump’s campaign spokesman Steven Cheung later confirmed the former president’s safety. “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” Cheung stated.
Furthermore, reports indicate that some of Trump’s supporters were not as fortunate, with one audience member losing their life in the attempt.

In the crypto markets, Donald Trump’s memecoin, MAGA (TRUMP), saw its price soar more than 47% following the incident. The Ethereum-based token jumped from $6.2 to $9.2 in less than a few hours, with its market capitalization surging from $293 million to $410 million.

The assassination attempt also impacted prediction markets. On Polymarket, an Ethereum-based platform, Trump’s odds of winning the upcoming election rose from 60% to 70%. Conversely, President Joe Biden’s reelection chances fell from 30% to 16%, while Vice President Kamala Harris fell to 8%.

This event comes as Trump has recently shifted his stance on cryptocurrencies. Despite previously describing Bitcoin as “like a scam,” he has now pledged to end what he calls the Biden administration’s “<a href="https://www.cryptotimes.io/2024/06/16/trump-vows-to-end-joe-bidens-war-on-crypto-if-elected/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">war on crypto</a>” if elected president.&nbsp;
On June 14, Trump declared his intention to support the crypto industry, arguing that the U.S. must maintain its leading position in the sector.
