They plan to introduce a new reserve currency, a bold venture that could challenge the supremacy of the US dollar and reshape international financial order. The initiative for this new currency, envisioned as a direct alternative to the US-dominated financial system, triggers both hopes and doubts.</p>
    <h2 id="brics-and-the-alternative-to-the-us-dollar">BRICS and the Alternative to the US Dollar</h2>
    <p>The BRICS’ efforts to create their own reserve currency come in the context of heightened global economic tensions. For years, the <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/brics-unveils-game-changer-ready-to-launch-brics-pay-and-challenge-dollar-dominance/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BRICS</a> have expressed a desire to detach from the dominance of the dollar, which is seen as a tool of American economic power. At the 2022 summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the bloc was actively working on a “new global reserve currency” to reduce dependency on Western currencies.</p>
    <p>This ambition was reinforced by sanctions imposed on <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/moscow-exchange-rejects-crypto-trading-withdrawal-from-russian-payment-project/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Russia</a> and Iran, both of whom are looking for alternatives to circumvent American restrictions. The explicit support from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has repeatedly criticized the historical role of the dollar in international trade, underscores the collective desire to establish a multipolar and less American-policy influenced financial order.</p>
    <h2 id="building-a-fragile-balance">Building a Fragile Balance</h2>
    <p>The idea of a joint BRICS currency faces significant economic and political hurdles, making its realization complex and uncertain. The economic disparities among the bloc members are substantial: China, with its dominant economy and already internationalized currency, tends to exert its influence over the other countries, making the balance within <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/brics-currency-ambitions-central-bank-plans-signal-economic-independence/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BRICS</a> difficult to maintain. Non-Chinese countries fear an over-reliance on the yuan, which could disadvantage their own currencies.</p>
    <p>India’s recent refusal to make payments in yuan for Russian oil imports highlights the underlying tensions.</p>

Yet, technological innovations alone will not overcome political resistance and international pressures, especially from the USA, who view the emergence of an alternative financial system unfavorably.</p>
    <p>The project might also be perceived as a vector of instability by the markets, which could curb the support of other nations and slow the adoption of a <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/putin-issues-warning-as-brics-encourages-middle-east-to-move-from-us-dollar-in-oil-trade-bitcoin-touted-as-solution/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BRICS</a> currency on the global stage. In the short term, the dollar retains its central role, supported by well-established institutions and economic networks.</p>
