Star Trek, the iconic science fiction media franchise created by the late Gene Roddenberry, is arguably the most notable exception with its optimistic vision of a 23rd century in which humanity has evolved into a peaceful and spacefaring civilization that is part of an interstellar government known as the United Federation of Planets. Or, as it’s simply referred to, the Federation.I have always been a <a href="https://www.digitallifeasia.net/change-asia-change-the-world/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">techno-optimist</a>. I would rather focus my energy on building a utopia rather than worrying about a future dystopia. I’m a big believer in technology because I know first-hand how powerful a tool it is – one that has changed my life for the better.The reality, however, is that, up to now, not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to technology and the internet. Which is why I believe that those of us who enjoy this privilege must reach across the digital divide and <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/politics/set-global-digital-standards-to-close-gap-between-haves-have-nots-pm-lee" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">close the gap between the digital haves and have-nots</a>, as Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has emphasized.“He offered four guiding principles to shape a global digital architecture.“It must be focused on improving people&#39;s daily lives; include all relevant stakeholders, from the government to civil society; set multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral norms fit for the complexity of digital challenges; and finally, identify a common set of development goals as a basis for global cooperation.”While I am a member of the Traditional Faction, as I discussed in <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/64084b2a24b7f93706ee5a8d/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">my previous article</a>, I believe that technology is a powerful tool that must be used to benefit people and serve the needs of the community. Which is why when I first joined the blockchain-based metaverse game and virtual city-state <a href="https://cryptopia.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Cryptopia</a>, I was really attracted to the <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/tech/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Tech Faction</a>, also known as the Technocrats.Tech is one of the four factions, along with Traditional, <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/642183182d80720f9caa3bba/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Eco</a>, and Industrial, that offer competing views on how Cryptopia should be run as a society.What is the Tech vision for Cryptopia? Here is the blueprint this faction has shared in the <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/tech/tech-faction-litepaper/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Tech litepaper</a>.“Our objective remained the same: turn Cryptopia into the technologically-advanced society Satoshi envisioned it to be, a prosperous city where everyone lives at the highest possible standard of living. Our strategy is two-fold: first, establish an automated society where all menial jobs are handled by robots and Al. Second, use scientific methods to develop an enhanced populace where everyone is healthy, highly educated, and living their highest potential.“The reason for the first goal is simple-life in a highly-advanced society cannot occur when the majority of the population is forced to grind away in low-paying, high-stress, menial labor. By automating such jobs, we can free up people to work on jobs that provide stimulating challenges and higher pay.“Of course, such occupations would require a population of experts, highly-skilled and educated. To this end, population control and genetic sciences can help. All citizens will be provided free consultation with specialists who will outline their genetic information. This will allow them to identify and hopefully remove any genetic disorders that they may pass on to their offspring. It will also help them make informed choices on whom they should start a family with.”To be honest, while I have no problem with the first goal, which is automating menial tasks using robots and AI, I am less comfortable with the idea of using genetic engineering to help people decide whom they should marry and have children with.Having said that, I do recognize that biotechnology and genetic engineering will change what it means to be human. One of my favorite books is “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Homo-Deus-Brief-History-Tomorrow-ebook/dp/B01BBQ33VE/ref&#61;tmm_kin_swatch_0" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow</a>&#34; by Yuval Noah Harari, which tackles the transformation of Homo sapiens to Homo deus through technological advancements.We have come to the point where we can technologically enhance our bodies and become transhumans. We are learning to coexist with AI and robots, and some humans are even falling in love with them – literally. So the future that the Tech Faction is envisioning for Cryptopia is already happening in the real world.The leader of the Technocrats is <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/tech/sam-clark/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Sam Clark</a>, who is the genius behind most of the everyday technology you will find in Cryptopia. Think of him as Cryptopia’s version of Tony Stark.“He hired and teamed up with like-minded individuals to establish the Technocrats, a group of young inventors innovating everyday life through technology and scientific experimentation.“With Cryptopia slowly establishing itself, Sam Clark sees the city-state as the best place to create the technological utopia that he envisioned, a brave new world to innovate and improve to its fullest technological capabilities.”But is a technological utopia possible in the real world?While Star Trek may be science fiction, the fact is that technological advancements are real, and that it’s entirely possible for humanity to <a href="https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/could-we-build-a-star-trek-utopia/#:~:text&#61;Unlike%20most%20sci%2Dfi%20shows,wasn&#39;t%20without%20its%20challenges" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">build a similar utopia</a>.“The advent of replicators in the Star Trek universe — devices that can create anything out of pure energy — made scarcity a thing of the past, and our society is close to such developments.“Singularity University’s Vivek Wadhwa believes that by the 2030s we should have secured unlimited energy, clean vehicles, mass-produced 3D-printed meat, and other mankind-bettering innovations. There’s no reason why scarcity should exist; there’s no reason why we can’t have our Star Trek utopia. However, there’s a human factor involved. Through these innovations, we’ll either see people stepping up to solve the world’s problems or creating more of them through greed.”As you can see, it’s not a question of technology, but rather of human behavior. A utopia is technically feasible, but is it humanly possible?Decades after Roddenberry introduced the world to the Star Trek universe when the first episode of the original TV series aired on Sept. 8, 1966, the core philosophy at its heart finally received an official name: <a href="https://screenrant.com/star-trek-philosophy-explained-utopia/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Astro-Liberation</a>.“Although Captain Kirk does not go into great detail on what exactly comprises ‘Astro-Liberation,’ he equates it with the Federation&#39;s belief system – which gives readers a good idea of its definition. Part of Star Trek’s future is that humanity, in addition to eradicating poverty and racism, has become a star-faring species; numerous Trek shows and movies, including First Contact, have made it clear that humanity learning they were not alone in the universe was the catalyst for bringing the species together. Through space exploration humanity found its salvation and in this issue, the Sigma Iotans are striving for the exact same thing; the key difference between humanity and the Iotans, however, is humanity fought long and hard to create a better world, whereas the Iotans are trying to obtain this through rapid imitation.“Of course, the larger redefinition of priories involved in Astro-Liberation doesn&#39;t necessarily hinge on alien contact – humanity could achieve a similar shift in consciousness by, for example, confronting the present day in comparison to the totality of Earth&#39;s future – but it&#39;s fascinating that Star Trek&#39;s utopia is so tied to its sci-fi ambitions, and that the Iotans&#39; mimicry of this necessitates technological progress as a step to societal enlightenment. For fans who have taken Star Trek&#39;s philosophy to heart, having a name for its core belief system is a huge win, though it&#39;s clear that the franchise believes this belief system is reached gradually, and can&#39;t simply be imitated into existence.”They say life imitates art.
