RMRK

We started the RMRK journey in the most cypherpunk of ways, hacking NFTs onto Kusama (the canary network of Polkadot) at a time when it wasn’t possible — to be clear, it is still not possible to have NFTs on <a href="https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/learn-nft#rmrk" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kusama</a>. The goal was always to get the RMRK standard adopted by the whole NFT industry. Given the fact that more than 60% of NFT activity happens on Ethereum (and EVM chains), we realized that having RMRK on EVM was an essential step to achieving our grand goal. To that end, we’ve been building for the past months, rewriting the RMRK logic into EVM contracts that can be deployed on EVM-compatible chains. This was spearheaded by a <a href="https://moonbeam.network/announcements/rmrk-logic-coming-to-moonriver/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">grant from PureStake</a>, the team behind Moonriver and Moonbeam.Now we’re close to the finish line, we find it necessary to explain to you what this move will mean for us. There’s already great excitement within the team as we see RMRK on EVM as the most pivotal event in RMRK’s relatively short history, paled only by the <a href="https://app.subsocial.network/&#64;rmrkapp/what-you-should-know-about-hou-ou-festival-17967" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Hou-ou festival</a>. To understand why we feel so, you first need to understand the technical steps involved in getting RMRK on EVM and how this impacts our future business and ecosystem development.RMRK on EVM — the technical meaningHaving RMRK on EVM can mean two things depending on how you look at it. RMRK on EVM involves:<ol><li>Translating the RMRK NFT standard into an EIP (Ethereum Improvement Proposal), proposing it to the Ethereum community, and getting it accepted.</li><li>Rewriting the RMRK NFT logic into smart contracts to be deployed on EVM chains.</li></ol>There are two main sides to every NFT standard — the standard and the implementation. For example, ERC721 is an NFT standard that was adopted after it was passed into the Ethereum law/code. It is regarded as a standard because it specifies how NFTs that want to be ERC721-compatible should be created (i.e. what kind of functions they should have — balanceOf, ownerOf, transferFrom, approve). Anyone can create an ERC721 NFT if they stick to the rules. This is what a standard helps achieve. In a similar way, when RMRK is able to pass an EIP for the creation of a new ERC (Ethereum Request for Comment) standard specific for RMRK NFTs, anyone will be able to create RMRK-compatible NFTs by adhering to these rules.A standard is application agnostic, meaning that many different applications can be built to implement the same standard differently. As such, it is not enough for RMRK to create a RMRK-compatible ERC standard, it needs to also create implementations that enable less technical-savvy users to utilize the standards without having to create their own implementations. For example, without a marketplace implementation such as Singular, it would be impossible for non-technical artists to mint RMRK NFTs on Kusama. They would need to hire a developer to assist them in minting and creating a site to display their NFT.Thus, when we say RMRK on EVM, we are pointing to two different but interconnected events. The first is having the RMRK standard become an ERC standard so that anyone with technical know-how can build with the full power of RMRK’s 2.0 NFT architecture. The second is deploying implementations (dApps–decentralized applications) that help non-technical users utilize the new RMRK-ERC standard. Given the length of time it takes to propose, argue for, and pass a new ERC standard, we will start with the second by releasing <a href="https://singular.app/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Singular</a> as the first implementation of the RMRK-ERC standard.RMRK on EVM — the ecosystem impactUnderstanding the potential ecosystem impact of having RMRK on EVM begins with an exploration of the advantages of EVM.<ol><li>Largest developer adoption of all blockchains</li><li>Biggest NFT community in terms of both users and projects</li><li>Higher surface area of high-level partners</li></ol>While the first two are reason enough for high optimism (pun not intended &#x1f31a;), the third is a major consideration that could have far-reaching impact. Specifically, having RMRK on EVM means that:<ul><li>There is more exposure for the RMRK standard on the grandest stage in crypto</li><li>There is significantly more adoption due to the higher number of developers and users. More developers means more unique products/projects built using RMRK.</li><li>We will find it easier to enter into high-impact business collaborations</li></ul>Already, the third reason is playing out but we cannot share any information yet until everything is signed and delivered. What is important to know is that RMRK on EVM will be a precursor to a great deal more exposure, adoption, and innovation with RMRK.ConclusionAs we get closer to the release of our EVM contracts, we will share more information, like what cool new features will be possible with the arrival on RMRK on EVM (hint: there are quite a few &#x1f643;).
