An animated series presented in the form of NFTs has sold out in 35 minutes flat — bringing congestion to the Ethereum blockchain.

Stoner Cats has been created by Mila Kunis, and tells the surreal story of five cats who get high after their owner’s medical marijuana falls into a fireplace.

It has an all-star cast — Jane Fonda, Ashton Kutcher, Seth MacFarlane and Vitalik Buterin among them — and reports suggest they are all getting paid in ETH.

A total of 10,420 NFTs were up for grabs, and each one was priced at 0.35 ETH. That’s worth about $800 at the time of writing.

Although there was insatiable demand for the project, there were downsides: Data from Dune Analytics suggests that 344.4 ETH (worth about $800,000) ended up being dropped on failed transactions.

‘Thank You So Much!’

Stoner Cats hopes to introduce a new way of raising funds to create content — one that would enable an aspiring musician in Bangalore to release a new song, or an artist in Oslo to create personal works that aren’t influenced by big media firms.

In a video released on Twitter following the sale, Kunis said:

“Thank you so much for believing in this entire crazy concept and idea, and being a part of it. It has been a whirlwind and we are so excited to continue down this journey with all of you. We’re so sorry that we broke Ethereum … but also, f*** it.”

The project is planning to create a decentralized autonomous organization to ensure that token holders can have their say over the show’s future direction.
