Coinbase suffered a "major outage" over the weekend that meant American users couldn't make deposits or withdrawals from their bank accounts.

During the downtime, the exchange had stressed that crypto purchases could still be made using debit cards or PayPal accounts.

When the issue was identified on Sunday, Coinbase assured customers on Twitter that their funds were safe.

It took about three hours for Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers to get back online, with the company apologizing for the inconvenience.

Such outages are often a source of exasperation for customers — especially when it coincides with bouts of volatility in the markets.

Some crypto enthusiasts use such disruption to emphasize the importance of retaining control of your private keys, and keeping coins in cold storage.
