'Alien Crackhead': Vitalik Pokes Fun at Himself

As the weekend hurtles towards us following another frustrating week for the crypto markets, Vitalik Buterin has stepped in to offer us all a bit of light relief.

Completely out of the blue on Twitter, the Ethereum co-founder asked for examples of "the craziest and most unhinged criticisms" that his followers had seen.

He shared some examples to kick off proceedings — one describing him as a "Bond villain," and another claiming he looks like an "alien crackhead."

Buterin's followers were more than happy to oblige. Some were fairly innocuous, such as this snazzy bit of wordplay:

Others decided to have a subtle dig at how long the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade is taking, which will (eventually) switch its blockchain from Proof-of-Work to the more scalable, energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake:

Others referenced remarks that Buterin made in 2014, in which he said that the "internet of money" — referring to Bitcoin — shouldn't cost $0.05 per transaction, describing it as "absurd."
That's a bit rich considering that, on average, transaction fees on Ethereum currently stand at $3.04. Although that's some way off the jaw-dropping peaks above $70 that were seen in May 2021, it still renders the blockchain unaffordable for many transactions.

A little-known fact about the 27-year-old programmer was also shared, with a bio on his website once stating:

"I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007-10, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock's Siphon Life spell. I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring. I soon decided to quit."
