Sotheby's has abruptly canceled an auction of 104 CryptoPunks after the seller withdrew at the last minute.
The legendary auction house had anticipated that the lot would sell for anywhere between $20 million and $30 million.
But as global markets and cryptocurrencies experience a downturn, reports from CoinDesk suggest that the highest pre-bid offer made stood at $14 million.

All of this suggests that the seller may have had cold feet — fearful that the change in market conditions would result in a less lucrative performance.

In tweets that have been derided for making a mockery of the NFT space, pseudonymous collector @0x650d retweeted the initial announcement of the Sotheby's sale, adding:

"nvm, decided to hodl."

Another suggested that his intent may have been more malicious — with a meme hinting that he was "taking Punks mainstream by rugging Sotheby's."

'Embarrassing'

Rug Radio founder Farokh was one of those who called out @0x650d for the stunt, and said it was "embarrassing for all of us in the space." He added:

"Bro you suck stop acting like you rugged Sotheby’s lmao you made everyone look stupid. Even the press here is laughing at us because of you stop hiding the guilt behind dumb ass memes."
