Ever since its birth in 1829, the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race has been one of Britain’s most famous sporting events.

Now Gemini — the crypto exchange founded by the Winklevoss twins — has just announced that they’ll be the Principal Partner of the 2021 race.

In a year of restrictions, the partnership will allow the event to go ahead safely, bringing a sense of normality back to London. In a recent blog post, the brothers said:

“We are thrilled to be combining two of our greatest passions — rowing and crypto — with our sponsorship of this historic event.”

Having been introduced to rowing as teenagers, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss claim that it was the sport that sparked their initial entrepreneurial spirit, as they were inspired to create a varsity rowing team at their high school. The twins added:

“Our experience in rowing taught us that whether you are building yourself as an athlete or building a startup, the power of big dreams together with conviction and perseverance cannot be underestimated.”

Gemini Opens Rowing to All

The sense of a shared goal, team comradery and razor focus that rowing provided them with is something that the Winklevoss duo hail as being fundamental to success. It’s because of the core values that the twins believe rowing instills, that they want to make the sport available to everyone.

Gemini has also created The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme, which aims to remove any financial blockers that may stop young people from getting into the sport. The $105,000 bursary will provide education and rowing instruction to young, disadvantaged students who would usually be unable to take part because of economic pressures. They’ll also be funding the high-performance rowing training at both Oxford and Cambridge.
