John McAfee Can Be Extradited to U.S. to Face Tax Evasion Charges, Spain Says

John McAfee can be extradited to face tax evasion charges in the U.S., a court in Spain has ruled.

The judgment marks a substantial setback for the antivirus software creator, who had argued that the extradition request was politically motivated.

McAfee does have an opportunity to appeal the judge’s decision to authorize the extradition request. The 75-year-old recently shared fears that he will die behind bars if he is taken into U.S. custody.

Prosecutors in America claim that McAfee failed to disclose his income and wilfully failed to file tax returns. The extradition’s approval relates directly to his tax affairs in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

McAfee was arrested at Barcelona Airport in October 2020, and has been in jail there ever since. He has been tweeting from his prison cell nonetheless, recently writing:

“The U.S. believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”
