John McAfee has been found dead in his prison cell — hours after a Spanish court ruled that he can be extradited to the U.S. to face tax evasion charges.

Little is known surrounding the circumstances of the 75-year-old’s death, but a local justice department has said that he may have killed himself.

McAfee had fought against his extradition to the U.S. Just last week, he told a court that he feared he would die behind bars if he was taken into American custody.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, medical services within the prison attempted to resuscitate the entrepreneur before doctors certified his death.

An investigation has now been launched.

McAfee was arrested at Barcelona's El Prat airport in October, where he was preparing to catch a flight to Istanbul. He has been incarcerated ever since.

He was on a "code red" wanted list from Interpol, which was seeking him on tax evasion charges spanning five years from 2014 to 2015.

The Spanish court had ultimately decided that he could be extradited to face charges relating to 2016, 2017 and 2018, but not the prior two years.

One week ago, McAfee tweeted:

"The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing."
