The pandemic has hit the sporting world hard, with football devotees forced to watch from home as matches were played to empty stadiums.

But now, a crypto betting website has entered into a new partnership with Southampton FC as part of plans to “recreate the magic of match day at home” through virtual reality technology.

Viewers are going to be able to watch 360-degree videos of exclusive football content straight from their mobile devices — and it’s also hoped that Southampton’s supporters will learn a little bit about crypto along the way.

The first VR experience was delivered in December as Southampton prepared to play Manchester City — and featured a tour of St Mary’s Stadium with club legends Franny Benali and Matthew Le Tessier… as well as a penalty masterclass.

Coingaming Group founder Tim Heath said: “We think cryptocurrency has a big future in football and we’re right behind it. Alongside fan experiences like this, we’ve just seen the first Bitcoin transfer take place where a footballer was purchased using cryptocurrency.”

And Southampton’s chief commercial officer David Thomas added: “We cannot wait for the full return of our fans but in the meantime, Sportsbet.io have found an innovative way to ensure our club and fans can stay connected.”

Russell Okung is having half of his NFL salary paid in crypto — and is encouraging other professional sports stars to do the same.

“Money is more than currency; it’s power,” he said in a statement.

Non-fungible tokens are another area where crypto and sports are well-aligned. NFTs can be compared with digital trading cards — making them perfect for fans who enjoy collecting their favorite footballers. Some NFTs of the world’s best-known stars have sold for tens of thousands of dollars.
