Brian Armstrong Speaks Out Against Plans to Pause AI Training

Coinbase's CEO has spoken out against plans to pause experimentation with artificial intelligence.

More than 1,800 people — including Elon Musk — have signed a letter calling on AI labs to pause the training of powerful systems (beyond GPT-4) for at least six months. It reads:

"Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders."

But Brian Armstrong argues this is a bad idea — and said committees and bureaucracies "won't solve anything. He wrote:

"As with many technologies, there are dangers, but we should keep marching forward with progress because the good outweighs the bad. The marketplace of ideas leads to better outcomes than central planning."

And he argued that fear shouldn't stop progress.
