London’s Metropolitan Police have seized a staggering £180m ($250m) worth of crypto — breaking a record that the force set only weeks ago.

The funds were confiscated as part of an ongoing investigation into international money laundering, and far exceeds the £114m ($157m) that was seized back in June.

A 39-year-old woman had been arrested on June 24 in relation to that first seizure on suspicion of money laundering offences and was later released on bail.

She was interviewed under caution in relation to this latest discovery on July 10, and has now been bailed.

‘We Worked Tirelessly’

In an announcement, Detective Constable Joe Ryan said:

“Less than a month ago we successfully seized £114m in cryptocurrency. Our investigation since then has been complex and wide-ranging. We have worked hard to trace this money and identify the criminality it may be linked to. Today’s seizure is another significant landmark in this investigation which will continue for months to come as we hone in on those at the center of this suspected money laundering operation.”

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Graham McNulty added that, while cash remains kind in the criminal world, “we’re increasingly seeing organized criminals using cryptocurrency to launder their dirty money.” He added:

“Whilst some years ago this was fairly unchartered territory, we now have highly trained officers and specialist units working hard in this space to remain one step ahead of those using it for illicit gain.”
