BREAKING: Ukraine Cancels Airdrop to Crypto Donors

Ukraine has announced that it is canceling a planned airdrop to people who have made crypto donations following Russia's invasion.

In a post on Twitter, Deputy Prime Minister Mykhalio Fedorov said:

"Every day there are more and more people willing to help Ukraine to fight back the aggression. Instead, we will announce NFTs to support Ukrainian Armed Forces soon. We DO NOT HAVE any plans to issue any fungible tokens."

It comes hours after a token called Peaceful World emerged — with speculation it was linked to the airdrop. A warning posted on Etherscan said:

"This token is reported to have been used for misleading people into believing it was sent from a well-known address and may be spam."

Ukraine had initially announced that it planned to reward crypto donors through an airdrop yesterday — and the news caused contributions to spike, with transactions worth millions of dollars being made in the hours that followed.

But little detail was given about exactly what was going to be airdropped, and when. The only thing known was that a snapshot of addresses that had made a donation was due to take place this afternoon.

Some had lamented the airdrop's existence, arguing that it had incentivized people to donate for financial gain, rather than because of the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

A number of people replying to Fedorov's tweet described his announcement as the "best rug pull ever."
