Senators Urge DOJ Investigation into Binance and Tether for Suspected Terrorist Financing
Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Rep. French Hill (R-AR) sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, urging the Justice Department to investigate Binance and Tether’s engagement in illicit activities, such as providing material support and resources to fund terrorism, including financing for Hamas.
Lawmakers Raise Concerns about Cryptocurrency's Role in Terrorist Financing
Two House Financial Services subcommittees and the Senate Banking Committee held hearings on terrorist financing. The hearings were focused on sanctions more than crypto, but some lawmakers voiced concern about the use of crypto in financing terrorism, including Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL).
US Treasury Official Warns Cryptocurrency Firms Against Assisting Terrorist Organizations
In a speech at London’s Royal United Services Institute, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyamo discussed efforts to combat terrorist financing, and warned cryptocurrency firms against allowing their platforms to be used to finance terrorist organizations.
