LAPTOP Token News
Hunter Biden is launching a meme coin called LAPTOP on the Base blockchain on Sept. 9, according to a
report by the Wall Street Journal. The token takes its name from the laptop Biden left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, whose contents became a major point of controversy before the 2020 US presidential election.
The total supply is set at 1 billion tokens. Biden and other founders have been allocated 30% of that supply, which will be locked from sale for six months and vest over two years. Another 20% will be distributed in two airdrop rounds to wallets that lost money on the
Official Trump (TRUMP) meme coin, to Biden's Substack subscribers, and to a mailing list run by his friend Andrew Callaghan, a video journalist.
Biden
teased the ticker symbol on X on Sept. 7 alongside a montage of news coverage about the laptop.
TRUMP peaked at a $15 billion market cap when it launched at the start of 2025 before falling roughly 97%, sitting at around $600 million at the time of writing. Trump's financial disclosures show he received $1.4 billion from meme coin and crypto deals last year.
Burns, Politics, and the CLARITY Act
The remaining 30% of LAPTOP's supply is tied to a burn mechanism based on specific outcomes. Those include a Democratic win in the 2028 presidential election,
Bitcoin (BTC) reaching a new all-time high, and LAPTOP's fully diluted value exceeding TRUMP's market cap. If those conditions are met, that portion of the supply would be permanently removed from circulation.
Since his father left office in January 2025, Biden has been increasingly vocal about crypto and blockchain. He called the Trump family's World Liberty Financial venture "corruption at a scale we've never seen" in August, comparing it to defunct exchange FTX and pointing to its ties to foreign governments including the UAE. In June, he said decentralized digital currency and the blockchain are "the inevitable future."

The LAPTOP launch arrives at a sensitive moment for US crypto legislation. The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, known as the CLARITY Act, is scheduled for a cloture vote in the Senate on Sept. 15. The bill is designed to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets. A high-profile meme coin launch tied to political figures on both sides could draw additional scrutiny to the industry at exactly the moment lawmakers are deciding its regulatory future.
